Wrinkle Relaxers

Injections of wrinkle relaxers (botulinum toxin A) block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it is injected. Without a signal, the muscle is not able to contract. The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles. Common wrinkle relaxers include Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin® and Jeuveau®.  Wrinkle relaxers can be used to:

  • Smooth crow's feet, forehead furrows, frown lines, lip lines and bunny lines

  • Diminish neck bands

  • Improve the appearance of skin dimpling of the chin

  • Lift the corners of the mouth

  • Soften a square jawline

  • Correct a gummy smile

The FDA has approved the use of Botox® for the frown lines and crow's feet, while Dysport® and Xeomin® are approved for frown lines only. All other uses are considered "off label."

Botox is also used to treat conditions such as cervical dystonia, overactive bladder, and chronic migraines.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that is injected into the skin to relax the muscles. The Difference Between Botox® and Dermal Fillers

Botox® Cosmetics is a form of botulinum toxin that is injected to correct facial creases. This is achieved by the toxin paralyzing facial muscles that would normally contract. When these muscles cannot contract, wrinkles will be unable to form, resulting in a much more youthful look.

Dermal fillers are a bit different. Dermal fillers fill in the gaps between skin layers, correcting wrinkles by leveling the skin’s surface beneath the epidermis. Fillers can correct wrinkles, soften skin, and give lips more volume.
